Quartz Physical Properties
Quartz (SiO2) is the most abundant single mineral on earth. It makes up about 12% of the earth's crust, occurring in a wide variety of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Quartz forms hexagonal prisms, terminated by rhombohedra, or pyramidal shapes. The faces are often striated, and the crystals twinned and distorted. It also occurs in massive, granular, concretionary, stalactites and cryptocrystalline habits. The streak is white. Quartz is a transparent to translucent mineral, and it has a vitreous lustre on fresh surfaces. Cleavage is poor and fracture conchoidal.
