Milky Quartz or Snow Quartz is a variety of the mineral Quartz (SiO2). The characteristic colour of milky quartz occurs in nature when rock crystal quartz is exposed to natural radiation from radioactive elements or adjacent radioactive rocks over long periods of time. The process by which this occurs is not completely understood; although it is known that exposure of transparent quartz to radiation can alter the oxidation states of impurities in the quartz structure resulting in the characteristic colours of milky quartz. Milky quartz often has minute cavity inclusions containing carbon dioxide or water. If there is a sufficient number of these minute fluid inclusions then the quartz becomes opaque. Milky quartz is often responsible for the cloudy phantoms inside of otherwise clear rock quartz, amethyst, citrine or smoky quartz. The milky quartz may have formed at an early stage of the crystal's growth and a later stage of clear quartz growth covered the milky quartz. The effect results in seemingly a crystal within a crystal and the interior crystal may have a ghostly look, hence the name phantom.
