Meaning of Sapphire

Physical Properties 

Gem corundum of any colour is referred to as sapphire. The colour of the well known blue sapphire is due to Fe2+ and Ti4+ impurities. Iron in the Fe3+ state causes the colour in some yellow sapphires, while other yellow sapphires owe their colour to irradiation induced 'colour centres'. Other colour influencing impurities in sapphires are vanadium, cobalt and nickel. Sapphire form as bipyramidal, prismatic, tabular, or rhombohedral crystals.
