Fire agate is a unique and captivating variety of chalcedony, a form of quartz. Fire agate is primarily composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), the chemical formula for quartz. However, what distinguishes fire agate is the presence of iron and other impurities that give it its characteristic play-of-color and iridescence.

The most distinctive feature of fire agate is its iridescent play-of-color, which displays vibrant flashes of red, orange, gold, green, and blue. This phenomenon is caused by the interference of light as it passes through thin layers of chalcedony and forms intricate patterns known as "fire.” Fire agate has a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7. Fire agate is primarily found in Mexico, particularly in the states of Chihuahua, Durango, and Sonora. It also occurs in parts of the southwestern United States, including Arizona and California.
